Commendation, Arnold Sayers Awards 1999, For A New House Overlooking Salcombe Estuary

MOST RECENT AWARDS

Our client wished to replace a small, dilapidated bungalow with a new house providing extensive accommodation. The site, in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, was visible from much of the surrounding area, and the old bungalow with its verandah had become a local landmark.

The scheme sought to be unobtrusive and reminiscent of the previous building in form but, once within, it is light and airy and larger than it appears. There is a large open-plan living area with massive stone fireplace and a stair spirals gracefully from the roof-space accommodation down to the basement games room, utility and storage areas. Outside, large flagged terraces under a pine vaulted verandah, which runs around the building, provide tranquil spaces from which to enjoy the views.
